Jubbah

جبة

Jubba

A long, loose outer garment, open at the front, worn over other clothes.

What it means

Jubba is an outer garment, commonly long, loose and open at the front, often with wide sleeves, worn over the other clothes. Faruqi lists it among the items of Muslim dress described as outer covering clothes. It is worn by scholars and by many other men in the Arab world and parts of Africa and Asia, in a range of fabrics and cuts. A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim reports that on a journey the Prophet (peace be upon him) wore a Syrian jubba with narrow sleeves, and washed his arms by drawing them from beneath it. The garment is a matter of custom and not a requirement of the faith.

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 54, listed as JUBBAH. The definition is restated here.
