Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib

Person

The Prophet’s father, who died before he was born.

What it means

Abdullah was the youngest son of Abdul Muttalib and the husband of Aminah. He died in Medina on his way back from a trading journey to Gaza, shortly before or after Muhammad’s birth by differing accounts, so the Prophet was orphaned from the first.

What the sources say

Abdullah means “servant of God”. That the Prophet’s father bore the name Abdullah is evidence that Allah was already known to the Arabs of Mecca as the name of God, as the Quran also says (29:61).
