أبو ذر
Abū Dharr
Person
A Companion from the tribe of Ghifar, known for his asceticism and for his stand against hoarding of wealth.
What it means
Abu Dharr accepted Islam early and returned to his tribe before joining the Prophet in Medina. The Prophet said of him that “the earth does not carry, nor the sky shade, one more truthful in speech than Abu Dharr” (al-Tirmidhi). He taught that those who store up gold and silver (9:34) must spend it, a view that brought him into conflict with Muawiya in Syria. He died in exile at al-Rabadha in 652.
