Ahmadiyya

Aḥmadiyya

Group

A movement founded in 1889 by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, which most Muslims do not count as part of Islam.

What it means

Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (d. 1908), of Qadian in the Punjab, claimed to be the Promised Messiah and Mahdi. His followers differ about whether he was a prophet: the Qadiani branch says he was a prophet without a new law, the Lahore branch that he was a reformer.

What the sources say

The view of the Muslim scholars is that the Quran calls Muhammad the “seal of the prophets” (33:40), so no prophet can follow him. Pakistan’s parliament declared the Ahmadis non-Muslim in 1974. Many Muslims also hold that whatever the theological dispute, violence against or legal discrimination against Ahmadis is wrong.
