“The Helpers”: the people of Medina who received the Prophet and his emigrant followers.
What it means
The Ansar were the Aws and Khazraj tribes of Medina who invited the Prophet, gave a pledge at al-Aqaba, and shared their homes and wealth with the Muhajirun, the emigrants from Mecca. The Quran praises “the first forerunners among the Muhajirun and the Ansar” (9:100), and also those who “prefer others to themselves even if they are in need” (59:9).
Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 46, listed as ANṢĀR. The definition is restated here.
