Aya

آية

Āya

A sign, and the word for a verse of the Quran.

What it means

Āya means a sign or a miracle, and the Quran uses it for natural signs (30:22), for the miracles of the prophets, and for its own verses, each of which Muslims see as a sign of God. The Quran has about 6,200 verses, counted in slightly different ways in different traditions. The Throne Verse (2:255) is the best known.

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 24, listed as ĀYAH. The definition is restated here.
