A Canaanite god whom the prophet Elijah rebuked his people for worshipping (37:125).
What it means
The Quran tells of Elijah (Ilyas) saying to his people: “Do you call upon Baal and abandon the best of creators, God, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?” (37:125–126). Baal was the storm-god worshipped in Canaan and Phoenicia and denounced in the Hebrew Bible. Hubal was the chief idol in the Kaaba before Islam.
