Badr

بدر

Badr

Event

The first major battle between the Muslims of Medina and Quraysh, in Ramadan, 2 AH (624).

What it means

About 313 Muslims met an army of roughly a thousand Meccans at the wells of Badr and won. The Quran recalls it: “God helped you at Badr when you were weak” (3:123), and speaks of angels aiding the believers (8:9–12). A number of Quraysh were captured.

What the sources say

The Meccans had been fighting the Muslims since they were driven from their homes and property. The prisoners were ransomed, and a report in Ahmad says some who could not pay were released after teaching Muslim children to read.
