Knowledge of the unseen belongs to God alone (72:26), and divination is forbidden.
What it means
“He is the Knower of the unseen, and does not disclose His unseen to anyone” (72:26). The Quran counts the divining arrows among the abominations (5:90). The Prophet said: “Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and asks him about anything, his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights” (Sahih Muslim). The call to look to the stars for signs of the future was likewise condemned.
Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 42, listed as GHAYB. The definition is restated here.
