Blood money: compensation paid to the family of a person killed unintentionally, and sometimes accepted in place of retaliation.
What it means
“It is not for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake, and whoever kills a believer by mistake must free a believing slave and pay blood money to his family” (4:92). The same verse applies it when the dead person belonged to a people with whom there is a treaty. For intentional killing the Quran sets equal retaliation, but praises pardon (2:178, 5:45).
