Jumʿa
The day of congregational prayer, which the Quran says should interrupt trade for a time and then allow people to disperse for their work (62:9–10).
What it means
“O you who believe, when the call to prayer is made on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of God and leave trade. That is better for you… And when the prayer is done, disperse in the land and seek God’s bounty, and remember God often” (62:9–10). The Friday prayer has a sermon and two units. The Prophet said that Friday is the best day on which the sun rises (Sahih Muslim).
What the sources say
Friday is not a day of rest: the Quran says to resume work after the prayer. A hadith in Sahih Muslim says that God led earlier communities away from Friday, giving the Jews the Sabbath and the Christians Sunday, and guided the Muslims to it.
