Hatred and hate speech

Topic

The Quran forbids letting hatred of a people make one unjust, and tells Muslims to be kind to those who do not fight them.

What it means

“Do not let hatred of a people prevent you from being just; be just, that is closer to piety” (5:8). “God does not forbid you from being kind and fair to those who have not fought you over religion” (60:8). The Prophet said: “Do not hate one another, do not envy one another” (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Often misunderstood as

That Muslims are taught to hate non-Muslims.

What the sources say

Some scholars teach a strong form of the doctrine of al-walāʾ wa-l-barāʾ, loyalty to Muslims and disavowal of unbelievers, and others limit it to disavowal of unbelief itself and not of people. Muslims are among the victims of hate crime in many countries, and many Muslim organisations support laws against incitement. Where speech about religion is concerned, the Quran says to answer arguments by arguments, in the way that is best (16:125).
