عيسى
ʿĪsā
Jesus, son of Mary: the Messiah and a mighty messenger of God in Islam.
What it means
The Quran calls him the Messiah, “honoured in this world and the next” (3:45), and says he was born of the virgin Mary (3:47, 19:16–21), spoke as an infant (19:30–33), and, by God’s leave, healed the sick, raised the dead and gave life to clay birds (3:49, 5:110). It names him “a Word from God” and “a spirit from Him” (4:171).
Muslims love and honour him, and believe he will return before the end of time (Sahih al-Bukhari).
Often misunderstood as
That Islam denies or insults Jesus.
What the sources say
The Quran does not accept that he is God or God’s son (5:72–75, 5:116–117), and says that his creation was like Adam’s, from dust (3:59). The disagreement is about what Jesus said of himself, and about the crucifixion (4:157). Both are taken up in the articles linked here.
