Jabr

Jabr

Person

A Christian craftsman of Mecca whom opponents claimed taught the Prophet, a charge the Quran answers.

What it means

Some Meccans said, “It is only a human being who teaches him.” The Quran replied: “The tongue of the one they point to is foreign, and this is a clear Arabic tongue” (16:103). The man named in reports, such as Jabr or Yasar, was a non-Arab who knew little Arabic, and could not have composed the Quran’s eloquence.

What the sources say

Commentators gave several names for the man, and none is certain. The point stands: the Quran’s challenge for a surah like it (2:23) was met with silence, not a claim of a tutor.
