qiṣāṣ

The law of equal retribution for killing and injury, with the strong encouragement to forgive or accept compensation.

What it means

“O you who believe, retaliation is prescribed for you in the case of the killed” (2:178), followed by the words, “but whoever is forgiven by his brother, then let him follow it with fairness.” In the case of killing, the family of the victim may demand retribution, accept blood-money, or forgive for the sake of God (5:45, 42:40). Courts and proof are required.
