Nazzala
To bring down from heaven to earth, the verb used in the Quran for God’s sending down of revelation.
What it means
Nazzala is an Arabic verb meaning to bring something down from above, here from heaven to earth. The Quran uses it of God sending down the revelation, as in the verse that speaks of what He has sent down upon His servant (2:23), and of the Book that He sent down to Muhammad (peace be upon him) with the truth (3:3). The verb is a form that carries the sense of repeated or gradual sending down. Muslims cite it for the fact that the Quran came in parts over the years of the Prophet’s mission. The related noun tanzīl names the sending down of revelation.
Often misunderstood as
That revelation is a human composition, when the term describes something sent down from God.
