وقوف
Wuqūf
Standing upright in the salah; the same word names the standing at Arafat in the Hajj
What it means
Wuqūf means standing. In the account given by Ismail al Faruqi it is the standing in ṣalāh, an act that stands among the postures of the prayer. More usually this posture is called qiyām, and the Quran commands the believers to stand before Allah in devotion (2:238). A worshipper who cannot stand may pray sitting, and one who cannot sit may pray lying on his side, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari. The same word wuqūf is used for the standing at Arafat on the ninth day of Dhu’l-Hijjah, which is the central rite of the Hajj. The context shows which sense is meant.
Often misunderstood as
That it is a bodily posture alone, when standing in the salah is an act of worship before Allah.
Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 54, listed as WUQŪF. The definition is restated here.
