Antisemitism

Topic

Hatred of Jews, which Islam’s sources do not teach; the Quran distinguishes particular acts from a whole people.

What it means

The Quran criticises some Jews for particular acts, and praises others (3:113–115, 7:159). It records Moses’ and the prophets’ honour (2:47, 45:16), and a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari says the Prophet stood up for the funeral of a Jew, saying “is it not a soul?”.

Often misunderstood as

That the Quran teaches that Jews as a race are cursed.

What the sources say

Modern hostility to Jews among some Muslims draws on political conflict and on imported European antisemitism, as well as on selective use of verses. Muslim scholars who condemn it point to the Quran’s statement that “no bearer of burdens bears another’s burden” (6:164) and to the law of the covenant that protected Jewish communities. Hatred of a people is not a doctrine of the faith.
