The questions most often put to Muslims

Open one to see the short answer, then read the full case.

The questionWhere are Uthman's copies of the Quran?

The Samarkand codex, now in Tashkent, is the copy tradition has attributed to Uthman for centuries, and its dating is argued. The Birmingham leaves are settled: radiocarbon dated to 568 to 645, in the Prophet's own generation. Both carry the text Muslims recite today.

Full answer: Uthman’s copies: 5 facts about the Quran’s earliest manuscripts
The questionWhy trust hadith written down after the Prophet, when Muslims question the gospels?

A hadith carries a named chain of transmitters, which Muslim scholars graded, rejecting many reports. The Catholic bishops' own Bible says 2 Peter was probably written in Peter's name by a later author, perhaps a century on. The standard is the chain, applied evenly.

Full answer: Written in Peter’s name: 5 things a Catholic Bible says about 2 Peter
The questionWhere is the Injil?

The Quran describes a gospel given to Jesus and preached by him, and says nothing of a book in his hand. Mark agrees in its first chapter, where Jesus comes proclaiming the gospel of God.

Full answer: Where is the Injil? 5 answers to the question critics ask most
The questionDoes the Quran affirm a Bible it says is corrupt?

The dilemma needs five assumptions, among them that the Injil is the four gospels and that corruption must be total. Each is contestable from the Quran's own text.

Full answer: The Islamic Dilemma: 5 assumptions the argument needs
The questionDid Paul keep the Law, or abolish it?

Paul told his churches they were released from the Law and that the Sabbath no longer bound them. Set that beside Matthew 5:19, where relaxing the least commandment makes a man least in the kingdom.

Full answer: Paul and the Law: 6 verses that sit badly with Matthew 5:17
The questionDid Jesus claim to be God?

He prayed to God, said the Father was greater, did not know the hour, and never said "I am God" in any gospel. The verses cited for the claim all need a later doctrine to read that way.

Full answer: 5 reasons why Muslims believe that Jesus is not God
The questionIs Allah a different god from the God of the Bible?

Allah is the Arabic word for God, used by Arab Christians before Islam existed and in Arabic Bibles today. The Quran tells Muslims to say to Jews and Christians that their God is one.

Full answer: 7 reasons why Allah of the Quran is the same God as the God of the Bible
The questionDid Muhammad die of poison, and does that make him a false prophet?

He lived four more years after Khaybar, while the man who ate beside him died within days. The immunity test being applied comes from the longer ending of Mark, which the oldest manuscripts lack.

Full answer: 6 answers to the claim that the Prophet died from poisoning
The questionDid the Quran borrow Haman from the Book of Esther?

A shared name proves nothing by itself. An Egyptian title for the overseer of quarry workers, attested in the reign of Ramesses II, matches the office the Quran gives Haman.

Full answer: 5 answers to the claim that Haman is a Quranic mistake
The questionWhy did the first Muslims pray towards Jerusalem?

The Quran records the first direction itself, gives its reason as a test of obedience, and records the change to Mecca. The objection is quoted and answered in the text it is aimed at.

Full answer: Jerusalem, then Mecca: 5 facts about the change of qibla
The questionWhere does the Quran say to pray five times a day?

The Quran gives the prayer times and tells believers to follow the Messenger for the rest. The five daily prayers have been performed publicly by every Muslim community since the first generation.

Full answer: Why five prayers? 5 answers on what the Quran says and what it leaves to the Prophet
The questionIs Islam really the fastest-growing religion?

Yes. Pew measured 347 million more Muslims between 2010 and 2020, more than every other religion combined. The drivers are births, youth and retention: 99 percent of people raised Muslim stay Muslim. Growth describes the world. It proves nothing about truth.

Full answer: Islam is the world’s fastest-growing religion: 6 figures from the latest data
The questionDid Islam spread by the sword?

The Quran forbids compulsion in belief and bounds fighting with a prohibition on transgression. Current data put jihadist violence far below the impression the coverage gives.

Full answer: 5 reasons why Islam is the religion of peace
The questionDoes the Quran tell men to beat their wives?

Quran 4:34 gives three steps and the last word is read by classical commentators as a symbolic touch at most, with the Prophet saying those who strike are not the best of men. He never struck a woman or a servant, and many scholars today treat any violence in the home as forbidden.

The Quran's text

The questionWhy did Uthman burn copies of the Quran?

Bukhari records the order and its reason in the same report: soldiers from Syria and Iraq were quarrelling over recitation, and Uthman acted to stop the community splitting over its Book. Burning a superseded copy is how Islamic law retires one respectfully.

Full answer: Uthman’s copies: 5 facts about the Quran’s earliest manuscripts
The questionIs there a complete Quran from the seventh century?

The Codex Parisino-Petropolitanus, from the first Islamic century, preserves close to half the text in one manuscript, and early leaves cover much of the rest. The complete text was carried from the start by recitation, memorised in full and recited daily, with writing as its check.

Full answer: Uthman’s copies: 5 facts about the Quran’s earliest manuscripts
The questionDo the Bible's manuscripts match today's text exactly?

Textual critics, Christian ones included, estimate around 400,000 variants among New Testament manuscripts. Most are trivial. Some are whole passages that modern Bibles bracket, such as the longer ending of Mark.

Full answer: Manuscript transmission: 5 differences between the Quran and the New Testament

Earlier scripture

The questionWhy did God not preserve the Injil?

The Quran attaches its promise of preservation to the Quran. Each earlier message was entrusted to its community, and the last was guarded directly. Jesus wrote nothing that survives, and Christians do not conclude from that that his teaching was lost.

Full answer: Where is the Injil? 5 answers to the question critics ask most
The questionHow could Jews and Christians everywhere corrupt scripture in the same way?

The Quran describes concealment and distortion of meaning within particular communities. Many classical scholars held that the distortion lay mainly in interpretation, with the words left standing. Neither requires a worldwide conspiracy.

Full answer: The Islamic Dilemma: 5 assumptions the argument needs

Jesus, Paul and Christian doctrine

The questionDoes the Quran say Mary is part of the Trinity?

The verse asks whether Jesus told people to take him and his mother as gods. It says nothing about the Trinity, which the Quran addresses in a different verse.

Full answer: Ezra and Mary in the Quran: 5 points on two contested verses
The questionWhich Jews called Ezra the son of God?

No surviving Jewish text says so, and that should be admitted. The tradition names Jews of Medina, and the Quran is very nearly the only record of what Arabian Jews believed. Jewish memory raised Ezra close to Moses, and one early text has him taken up to heaven.

Full answer: Ezra and Mary in the Quran: 5 points on two contested verses

Revelation and prophethood

The questionWho saw Gabriel in the cave?

No one, as no one saw the burning bush or the light on the Damascus road. Every prophetic call is private. Islam rests its case on the message, which anyone can read and test.

Full answer: Who saw Gabriel? 5 answers on witnesses to revelation
The questionIs there evidence a prophet before Muhammad prayed at the Kaaba?

The account of Abraham and Ishmael raising its foundations comes from the Quran, and Muslims accept it on that basis. There is no archaeological record of Abraham anywhere, Hebron included, so the demand applies to Genesis as much as to the Quran.

Full answer: Jerusalem, then Mecca: 5 facts about the change of qibla

Practice and history

The questionIs Islam a Middle Eastern religion?

The country with the most Muslims is Indonesia, with about 239 million, and it is not an Islamic state: its constitution names one God and recognises six religions. Its national mosque stands across the street from Jakarta Cathedral.

Full answer: 6 facts about Indonesia, the country with the most Muslims
The questionWhy do ex-Muslim stories persuade so many readers online?

A Malaysian study of one ex-Muslim blog found that storytelling and sympathy carried much of the persuasion, and that accounts of the insults she received drew readers to her. The replies researchers thought could reach her answered her reasons with respect.

Full answer: How an ex-Muslim blog persuades: 5 findings from a Malaysian study
The questionDid any ancient writer mention the Kaaba before Islam?

Possibly. Diodorus of Sicily described a temple revered by all Arabians, and Ptolemy listed a town called Macoraba, but scholars dispute both identifications. The Quran makes the claim on its own authority.

Full answer: The Kaaba before Islam: 5 ancient witnesses, weighed

Full answer: The Dome of the Rock: 6 things its inscriptions tell us about the Quran

Full answer: Who burned the Library of Alexandria? 5 facts behind the story

Full answer: What was the jizya? 6 facts about the tax
The questionWas the Quran perfectly preserved?

Academic scholarship finds a standard text fixed under Uthman within two decades of the Prophet, followed by every later manuscript but one, with modest variation in matters the Islamic tradition itself recorded, such as surah order and verse numbering.

Full answer: Quran preservation on Reddit: 5 points from the scholars’ debate
The questionDoes Islam punish leaving it with death?

Mainstream Islamic law prescribes it, on the strength of the hadith, while the Quran condemns apostasy without naming a worldly penalty. Some senior scholars confine the penalty to treason; the question is debated among Muslims today.

Full answer: Apostasy in Islam: 6 facts about the death penalty debate
The questionDoes the Quran deny the crucifixion?

It denies that Jesus was killed or crucified by his enemies, and says God raised him to Himself. Historians treat the crucifixion as well attested; Muslims hold to the Quran on the authority of revelation, and reject atonement by proxy on the Hebrew prophets' own principle that each soul bears its own sin.

Full answer: The crucifixion and the Quran: 6 facts about Quran 4:157
The questionDoes Islam allow child marriage?

The Quran sets no age but requires maturity and consent, and the Prophet gave a woman the right to refuse a marriage she disliked. Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey set the minimum at 18.

Full answer: Child marriage and Islam: 5 facts
The questionDid Islam ban slavery?

It did not abolish it in one step. It made freeing slaves the best of deeds, closed the sources of enslavement to a narrow channel, gave slaves rights, and scholars today hold slavery forbidden.

Full answer: Slavery in Islam: 6 facts
The questionDo Muslims believe in 72 virgins?

The Quran says houris, wide-eyed companions, with no number, and promises spouses to every believer. The figure seventy-two comes from one report in al-Tirmidhi that many scholars weaken, and nothing in the sources promises it as a reward for violence.

Full answer: The houris and the Quran’s Paradise: 5 facts
The questionDoes taqiyya let Muslims lie to unbelievers?

The Quran allows a person under threat of death or torture to hide his faith, as Ammar ibn Yasir did. It is a concession for compulsion and not a method, and the Quran and the Prophet demand truthfulness and keeping covenants.

Full answer: 5 myths about taqiyya

Sharia means the path. The hudud punishments are a handful of offences, fenced by very strict proof, and most Islamic law concerns worship, trade, family and character.

Full answer: 5 myths about sharia and the hudud punishments

Full answer: War, killing and execution in Islam: 5 facts
The questionWhy does Islam forbid interest?

The Quran threatens it with war from God, treats a loan as an act of kindness, and holds that profit should come with risk. Islamic finance uses partnership and sale instead.

Full answer: 5 reasons Islam forbids interest
The questionHow old was Aisha when she married the Prophet?

The report in Bukhari says six at the contract and nine at the consummation, and some scholars argue from other reports that she was older. The question is open among scholars, and the rest of her record, as teacher and narrator, is rarely told.

Full answer: 5 questions about Aisha, answered from the sources
The questionDoes Islam require women to wear the hijab?

Full answer: Hijab and modesty in Islam: 5 facts

Full answer: 5 ideas behind Islamic art, and what the arabesque is for

Full answer: 5 reasons why the universe demands a creator

Atheists can plainly be good. The question is what grounds the duty, and flourishing, consensus and evolution each explain a feeling without making it binding.

Full answer: Why morality is impossible without God: 4 fatal flaws in secular humanism
The questionIf God knows everything, do we have free will?

Knowing is not forcing. The Quran says whoever wishes may believe or disbelieve and holds each soul to account, and the schools differ only on how God's decree and human choice fit together.
