إحرام
iḥrām
The state of consecration entered for the pilgrimage, with its simple dress and restrictions.
What it means
A pilgrim enters ihram at a set place with the intention for Hajj or Umrah. Men wear two unsewn white cloths and women their normal modest dress; all avoid perfume, cutting hair or nails, hunting, marital relations and quarrelling (2:196–197, 5:95). The equal dress removes marks of rank so that the rich and poor stand alike before God.
