رضي
Raḍiya
To be pleased; used of God’s pleasure with His servants and theirs with Him.
What it means
Raḍiya is an Arabic verb meaning to be pleased or satisfied. It is used in the Quran of God’s pleasure with those who believe and do good, and of their pleasure with Him: God is well pleased with them, and they are well pleased with Him (98:8). The verb gives the nouns riḍā, pleasure, and riḍwān, a state of pleasure that God grants. It also gives the invocation raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu, “may God be pleased with him”, said after the name of a Companion. Seeking God’s pleasure is a stated aim of the believer’s conduct and worship.
Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 33, listed as RAḌIYA. The definition is restated here.
