Raḍiya Allāhu ʿAnhu (or ʿAnhum)

“May God be pleased with him (or with them).” It is said whenever a Companion of the Prophet is mentioned by name.

What it means

Raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu means “may God be pleased with him”. For a woman the form is ʿanhā, and for several people ʿanhum. Muslims say it after the name of a Companion of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and in writing it is often abbreviated to RA. It rests on the Quran’s praise of the first Emigrants and Helpers, “God is well pleased with them, and they are well pleased with Him” (9:100), and on God’s pleasure with the believers who pledged allegiance under the tree (48:18). It expresses love and respect for the generation that carried the message to later Muslims.

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 59, listed as RADIYA ALLAHU ‘ANHU (OR ‘ANHUM) (RA). The definition is restated here.
