al-Riḍā

Topic

The pleasure of God, which believers seek; the noun from raḍiya.

What it means

Al-Riḍā is the pleasure of God with His servants. It is the noun from the verb raḍiya, to be pleased. The Quran speaks of God’s pleasure with the believers (98:8), and says that His pleasure (riḍwān) is greater than any other reward in Paradise (9:72). Seeking riḍā is a central aim of the believer. It is also used of a person who is content with God’s decree. Muslims pray that God be pleased with them, and the invocation said for the Companions and other righteous people asks for exactly this.

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 34, listed as AL RIḌĀ. The definition is restated here.
