وجه

Wajh

Face, or by extension direction, aspect or path; said of Allah it means His Face, or His sake

What it means

Wajh means face, and by extension a side, aspect, record or way. When the word is used of Allah it has two main senses. One is His Face, as in the verse “everything will perish except His Face” (28:88; see also 55:27). The other is His sake: the Quran speaks of giving food “only for the sake of Allah” (76:9), which in Arabic uses wajh. Here the word means the intention to please Him.

The Quran also tells the believer that wherever he turns, there is the wajh of Allah (2:115). Scholars have differed on how to understand the attribute: some affirm it as stated without asking how, and others interpret it figuratively. In the Muslim use, doing a deed for the wajh of Allah means doing it solely for Him, with no thought of praise or gain from people.

Often misunderstood as

That a human face is attributed to Allah, when the Face of Allah is affirmed without likening Him to creation.

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 47, listed as WAJH. The definition is restated here.
