Book

A Hindu text some Muslim writers cite as foretelling Muhammad; most scholars date the passage after Islam.

What it means

A passage in the Bhaviṣya Purāṇa speaks of a teacher from the desert whom some Muslims have identified with Muhammad. Scholars generally date the Purana in its present form to a period long after the rise of Islam, with later additions.

What the sources say

Many Muslim scholars do not rely on it. Islam’s own evidence of the Prophet is the Quran and the record of his life, and the Quran’s claim that earlier scriptures foretold him refers to the Torah and Gospel (7:157), not to other texts.
