The Quran calls Muslims a “middle community” and forbids excess in religion; Muslim scholars have condemned terrorism.

What it means

“Thus We made you a middle community” (2:143). “People of the Book, do not go to excess in your religion” (4:171, 5:77). The Prophet said: “Beware of excess in religion; those before you were destroyed by excess” (Ahmad, al-Nasa’i) and “those who go to extremes are destroyed” (Sahih Muslim). He described a group who would recite the Quran but whom it would not benefit, a description the scholars later applied to the Kharijites.

What the sources say

In 2004–05 the Amman Message, endorsed by hundreds of scholars from all schools, affirmed that no one may call another a non-Muslim, and rejected terrorism and killing in God’s name. The Prophet said that whoever kills a person under a treaty will not smell the fragrance of Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari).
