فطرة

Fiṭra

The innate disposition with which every person is born, inclined to recognise God.

What it means

“So set your face to the religion, upright; the fiṭra of God upon which He created people” (30:30). The Prophet said: “Every child is born in a state of fiṭra; then his parents make him a Jew, a Christian or a Magian” (Sahih al-Bukhari). A list of acts of fitra includes clipping nails, trimming the moustache, circumcision, and shaving the pubic hair (Sahih al-Bukhari).

What the sources say

The idea is that no child is born in sin: every person starts with a natural recognition of his Creator.
