The Quran says that Mary was protected from Satan at her birth, and that Jesus was born miraculously without a father.
What it means
Mary’s mother prayed: “I seek refuge for her and her offspring in You from the accursed Satan” (3:36). The Prophet said that every child is touched by Satan at birth, except Mary and her son (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). The Quran says that God breathed His spirit into Mary (66:12), and that Jesus was created by God’s word as Adam was created without parents (3:45–47, 3:59).
Often misunderstood as
Islam has no doctrine of original sin, so there is nothing to be “immaculate” from in the Christian sense. The Muslim teaching is of protection, and of miraculous birth, from a God who creates as He wills.
