الجنيد
al-Junayd
Person
A Baghdad scholar and Sufi (d. 910) known as “the master of the group”, who kept the Sufi path in line with the law.
What it means
Junayd taught that the path of Sufism is bound by the Quran and the Sunna, and held that sobriety, with strict adherence to law, is a higher state than the ecstasy of those who lose themselves. He was a jurist of the school of Abu Thawr, and his letters and sayings are studied across Sufi orders.
