أبو هريرة
Abū Hurayra
Person
A Companion who narrated more hadith than any other, and was a close companion of the Prophet for his last years.
What it means
Abu Hurayra of the tribe of Daws came to Medina in the year of Khaybar (628–29) and stayed with the Prophet, with little else to do than learn from him. He is credited with about 5,300 hadith. He explained why he narrated more than the others: the Muhajirun were busy in the markets and the Ansar with their land, while he stayed to keep his stomach full and to hear (Sahih al-Bukhari). His name means “father of the kitten”.
What the sources say
His narrations are among the most used in hadith collections.
