بنو النضير
Banū al-Naḍīr
Group
A Jewish tribe of Medina, expelled in 625 after a plot against the Prophet.
What it means
Banu al-Nadir were one of three Jewish tribes of Medina who had signed the agreement with the Prophet. According to the biographies, they were besieged and sent away with their goods after an attempt on his life, when they took what they could carry. Their lands are addressed in chapter 59.
What the sources say
The Quran says of them “they thought no one could take them from their fortresses” (59:2). The other two tribes were Banu Qaynuqa, expelled earlier after a violation of the pact, and Banu Qurayza, whose fate is told in the entry on them. In each case the Muslim sources connect the action to a breach of the covenant.
