The Quran’s chapter “The Romans” (30) says the Byzantines, defeated by the Persians, would win “within a few years”.
What it means
Chapter 30 begins: “The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land, but after their defeat they will be victorious within a few years” (30:2–4). The Persians captured Jerusalem in 614, and the Byzantine emperor Heraclius defeated them from 622 and finally in 627–628. Heraclius also received a letter from the Prophet, according to Sahih al-Bukhari.
What the sources say
The Arabic word for “few” (biḍʿ) is three to nine, and Byzantine successes began within that time. Muslims treat it as an example of an unlikely statement that was borne out.
