Topic

A 2003 novel and 2006 film claiming that the divinity of Jesus was invented at Nicaea; historians reject its claims.

What it means

Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code says that the Council of Nicaea in 325 voted Jesus into divinity. Some Muslim writers have welcomed it as supporting the view that Christian doctrine departed from Jesus’ teaching. Historians point out that Christians had worshipped Jesus as divine long before Nicaea and that the council’s argument was over a precise definition of his relation to the Father.

What the sources say

Muslims need not rely on a novel. Their own argument from the Quran and the Gospels is made on its own terms, and does not depend on a theory about Constantine.
