حكم
Ḥukm
Judgement or rule: the Quran says that judgement belongs to God (12:40), and the word is also used for a ruling in law.
What it means
“Judgement belongs only to God” (12:40, 6:57). The Kharijites used the words “no judgement but God’s” against Ali, who said that it was “a true word by which a falsehood is meant”. In law, ḥukm is the status of an act, one of five: obligatory, recommended, permitted, disliked or forbidden.
