منافقون
Munāfiqūn

Those who profess faith but do not believe, whom the Quran warns against in chapter 63 and elsewhere.
What it means
The Quran says that “when the hypocrites come to you they say: ‘we bear witness that you are the Messenger of God’… and God bears witness that the hypocrites are liars” (63:1), and that they are “in the lowest depth of the Fire” (4:145). The Prophet said: “The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks he lies, when he promises he breaks it, and when he is trusted he betrays” (Sahih al-Bukhari).
What the sources say
The Prophet did not execute the hypocrites of Medina, among them Abdullah ibn Ubayy, though their identity was known, and said that people would say Muhammad kills his companions. The judgement on what is in people’s hearts is left to God.
