islām

Submission to God, the name the Quran gives to the religion of all the prophets.

What it means

The word comes from the root s-l-m, which means submission and also peace and wholeness. “The religion with God is Islam” (3:19), and “Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour on you and approved Islam as your religion” (5:3). Abraham “was neither Jew nor Christian but a Muslim, upright” (3:67), and Muslims call each prophet’s message by the same name. In the hadith of Gabriel Islam is the five pillars, as faith is the six articles and ihsan is worshipping God as if one sees Him (Sahih Muslim).

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 35, listed as MUSLIM. The definition is restated here.
