الخبيث
al-Khabīth
What is foul and evil: whatever goes against God’s will and is judged bad and wrong.
What it means
Al-khabīth is that which is bad, foul or evil. Faruqi defines it as what goes against the will of God and is counted as bad, wrong and evil. The Quran sets it against al-ṭayyib, the good and pure: “Say: the bad and the good are not equal, even if the abundance of the bad pleases you” (5:100). The Prophet (peace be upon him) is described as one who “makes lawful for them the good things and forbids for them the foul” (7:157). The word covers wrong things in food, conduct and character, and jurists use it when they discuss what is forbidden. Its plural, khabāʾith, means wicked deeds.
Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 31, listed as AL KHABĪTH. The definition is restated here.
