Qisṭ

Justice, equity and uprightness in all dealings; the verbal noun of aqsaṭa.

What it means

Qisṭ means justice, equity and uprightness in dealing with all matters. It is the verbal noun of the verb aqsaṭa, to act justly, and the one who acts justly is the muqsiṭ. It stresses even-handed fairness in weight, judgment and treatment of others. The Quran commands believers to stand firmly for justice (qisṭ), as witnesses for God, even against themselves or their kin (4:135; see also 5:8). It says that God loves the just (al-muqsiṭīn) (49:9), and that He sent His messengers with the Book and the balance so that people may uphold justice (57:25).

Often misunderstood as

That it is only a legal term, when the Quran treats it as a standing duty in every dealing.

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 44, listed as QIST. The definition is restated here.
