al-Raʾūf

Topic

A divine name: the One who is deeply and sympathetically concerned with the lot of human beings.

What it means

Al-Raʾūf is a divine name meaning the One who shows deep, tender concern for His creatures. It points to a sympathy that attends to the situation of people and does not leave them in hardship. The Quran joins it often with al-Raḥīm. The Quran says that God is full of kindness (raʾūf) and mercy toward people (2:143). It also uses the same word of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who is described as compassionate and merciful toward the believers (9:128). Muslims call on the name when asking God for gentleness and relief.

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 32, listed as AL RA'ŪF. The definition is restated here.
