الصفا والمروة

al-Ṣafā wa-l-Marwa

Place

Two small hills beside the Kaaba between which pilgrims walk seven times in the Hajj and Umra.

What it means

The Quran says that “Safa and Marwa are among the signs of God” (2:158). The rite recalls Hagar’s search for water for her infant Ishmael, until the spring of Zamzam appeared, as Ibn Abbas related in Sahih al-Bukhari.
