The Quran’s rules on property taken in war, with a fifth for charity and a rule against its staying among the rich.
What it means
Chapter 8 (“al-Anfal”, the spoils) begins with the dispute after Badr and puts the spoils in the hands of God and the Messenger (8:1). A fifth goes to God, the Messenger, relatives, orphans, the poor and the wayfarer (8:41). Of property that comes without fighting, the Quran says it is so “that it may not circulate among the rich of you” (59:7).
