Event

The siege of Medina in 627 by Quraysh and allied clans, which the Muslims withstood behind a trench.

What it means

About 10,000 men came against Medina, and the Muslims, on the advice of Salman the Persian, dug a trench across the open side of the city. The siege lasted weeks, and a storm and divisions among the allies led to the withdrawal. The Quran recalls it in chapter 33, “the Clans” (33:9–11).
