al-Ḥashr

The resurrection and the bringing together of all people to receive judgment.

What it means

Al-ḥashr is the gathering of all humankind on the Day of Resurrection. The word means to assemble. The Quran says that every creature will be brought before the Lord: “To their Lord they will be gathered” (6:38). A scene of the day reads: “We shall gather them, and We shall not leave out any of them” (18:47). Surah 99 describes the earth shaking and people coming forth to be shown their deeds.

Surah 59 bears the name al-Ḥashr because of its mention of the expulsion of a tribe in Medina, which it calls “the first gathering” (59:2). On the Day, people will stand before God for the reckoning of their deeds, which is called al-ḥisāb. The gathering is a prelude to judgment, and it is one of the matters of the Last Day that Muslims affirm as part of belief in the Hereafter.
