المجيب
al-Mujīb
Topic
A divine name meaning the One who answers prayer.
What it means
Al-Mujīb means the One who answers. It is a name of God, from the root j-w-b, to respond. The Quran says of Him through the prophet Salih, “My Lord is near and responsive” (11:61). Elsewhere it says, “When My servants ask you about Me, I am near. I answer the call of the caller when he calls on Me” (2:186). Muslims call on God by this name when they pray, and they take it as an assurance that the prayer is heard. The answer may come in different forms: as what was asked, as a better gift, or as relief from a harm. It does not mean that every wish is granted in the form asked.
Often misunderstood as
It does not mean that every request is met in the form the person wants; the answer is according to God’s wisdom.
Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 28, listed as AL MUJĪB. The definition is restated here.
