دعاء

Duʿāʾ

Prayer of supplication: asking God directly for what one needs.

What it means

“When My servants ask you about Me, I am near; I answer the call of the caller when he calls” (2:186). “Call upon Me; I will respond” (40:60). The Prophet said that supplication is worship (al-Tirmidhi). It can be made at any time, in any language, and needs no intermediary.

What the sources say

The Muslim understanding is close to the verse in Matthew (“ask and it will be given to you”). The difference on which Islam insists is that one asks God directly, without a saint or priest between.

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 32, listed as DU'Ā'. The definition is restated here.
