صلاة

ṣalāh

The ritual prayer, performed five times a day, the second pillar of Islam.

What it means

“Establish prayer; indeed prayer prevents shameful and wrong deeds” (29:45). The five prayers at dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset and night (11:114, 17:78) are said facing the Kaaba, with standing, bowing and prostration, after washing (5:6). The Prophet likened them to a river at one’s door in which one bathes five times a day (Sahih Muslim).

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 36, listed as ṢALĀH. The definition is restated here.
