ذكر
Dhikr
Remembrance of God: reciting His names and praises, in prayer and at other times.
What it means
“O you who believe, remember God with much remembrance” (33:41). “Truly, in the remembrance of God do hearts find rest” (13:28). Common forms are subḥān Allāh (glory to God), al-ḥamdu li-llāh (praise be to God) and Allāhu akbar, which the Prophet recommended after each prayer thirty-three times each (Sahih al-Bukhari). Sufi orders use group recitation as a discipline.
Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 32, listed as DHIKR. The definition is restated here.
