The Quran says that God will make the Prophet recite so that he does not forget except what God wills (87:6–7), and some verses were caused to be forgotten.
What it means
“We shall make you recite, and you will not forget, except what God wills” (87:6–7). The Quran also says that whatever verse God abrogates or causes to be forgotten, He replaces by a better one (2:106). A report in Sahih al-Bukhari records the Prophet’s saying, on hearing a man recite, “May God have mercy on him: he reminded me of verses I had been caused to forget.”
Often misunderstood as
That Muhammad’s forgetting of verses shows the Quran was not preserved.
What the sources say
Muslims hold that these cases are what the Quran itself describes: verses lifted by God’s will, as part of naskh, and a human being’s forgetting of what he had not been commanded to keep. The Quran as it is was preserved by recitation and in writing, and Muslims believe God’s promise to guard it (15:9).
