Topic

The Quran forbids killing and says that taking one life unjustly is as if one had killed all of humanity.

What it means

“Whoever kills a person, other than for murder or corruption in the land, it is as if he had killed all people; and whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved all people” (5:32). “Do not kill the soul that God has made sacred except by right” (17:33; 6:151; 25:68). The law of equal retribution (2:178) includes the encouragement to forgive (2:178, 42:40) and blood-money. Women, children and the elderly may not be killed in war (Sahih al-Bukhari).

What the sources say

Classical jurists required a court and due proof for a death sentence; the Prophet said that the first matters judged on the Day of Judgement will be blood-shed (Sahih al-Bukhari).
