اللهم اكفني بحلالك عن حرامك، واغنني بفضلك عمن سواك

Allāhumma ikfinī bi-ḥalālika ʿan ḥarāmika wa aghninī bi-faḍlika ʿamman siwāk

A prayer for sufficiency from lawful gain, freedom from need of the forbidden, and enrichment by God’s grace alone; said before any enterprise or day of work.

What it means

The supplication asks God for three things: enough from what is lawful (ḥalāl) so that no need of the forbidden arises, freedom from dependence on anyone other than God, and enrichment from His grace. A Muslim says it before beginning an enterprise or a day of productive work. It rests on the Quranic command, “Eat of what is lawful and good on the earth” (2:168), and on the belief that provision comes from God. The prayer is the usual dua for lawful earning.

Term and Arabic as listed in Ismail al Faruqi, Toward Islamic English (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1995), p. 61, listed as ALLAHUMMA AKFINĪ BI ḤALĀLIKA ‘AN ḤARĀMIK, WA AGHNINĪ BI FAḌLIKA ‘AMMAN SIWĀK.. The definition is restated here.
